Shakurspeare: A Tribute to Tupac Shakur and the 50th Anniversary of Hip Hop
Baltimore, MD – Become A Patron, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the power of arts and culture in the lives of young people, is proud to commemorate the 50th anniversary of hip hop, which began on August 11, 1973.
Hip hop has been a cultural force for half a century, inspiring countless artists, musicians, and writers to express themselves through this vibrant and dynamic art form. To celebrate this milestone anniversary, Become A Patron is proud to announce the upcoming tour of Shakurspeare, a powerful piece of artwork in their collection.
Created by artist and author Darrin Keith Bastfield, Shakurspeare is an original oil painting that includes the very first master audio recording of Tupac Shakur, hidden in a compartment, and is inspired by the late rapper's dream of becoming a Shakespearean actor as told to Bastfield. Shakurspeare is not just a painting, but a time capsule that includes an archived artifact of one of the most prolific rap artists of our time.
The exhibition will be touring educational institutions as a solo one-work exhibition and will include face-to-face lectures. Shakurspeare is a tribute to the legacy of Tupac Shakur and his profound influence on hip hop and the arts. As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of hip hop, Become A Patron recognizes the vital role that this cultural movement has played in shaping our society and inspiring young people to pursue their dreams.
In addition to the Shakurspeare exhibition, Darrin Keith Bastfield is also in production of a documentary film titled Born Busy: Exploring Tupac Shakur and the Power of Arts and Culture. This film will further highlight the importance of arts and culture in underserved communities and is a testament to Become A Patron's dedication to promoting the power of arts and culture in the lives of young people and working towards a more equitable and inclusive society.
"We are thrilled to be able to share the powerful message of Shakurspeare with educational institutions and students across the country, especially as we commemorate the 50th anniversary of hip hop," said Donna D. Brown, Program and Tour Coordinator for Become A Patron. "Through this exhibition and film, we hope to inspire young people to pursue their dreams and to understand the importance of arts and culture in their communities."
